Armadillidium vulgare "Magic Potions" establish moderately in a vivarium, and will act as janitors to keep the vivarium clean, as well as a snack that provides a natural calcium boost. These isopods can reach sizes of up to 21 mm and live for about 3 years. Native to Europe, the United Kingdom, Egypt, and Turkey, they thrive in habitats that mimic their natural environment. Your terrarium should feature a mix of decomposing leaves, wood, and black earth, with optional additions such as sand, sphagnum moss, cork bark, and chemical-free potting soil. Provide ample hiding spots using various mosses, leaves, and bark, and ensure the terrarium is equipped with a lid for ventilation. Maintain temperatures between 20°C to 27°C and keep the habitat slightly moist, as these isopods are not resilient to dry conditions. Their diet primarily consists of decaying plant matter, supplemented occasionally with small amounts of protein and fruits like carrots and apples. Armadillidium vulgare are suitable for intermediate-level keepers due to their prolific reproductive rate, typically resulting in a male-dominated population. However, due to their rarity, we do not recommend them as feeder items. They are quite large as adults, but the younger ones are palatable and are eaten by amphibians, and invertebrates. Larger amphibians will consume adults as well, but not poison dart frogs. These isopods have a hard, calcified body, and are prized for their rarity and their bright, white appearance. These isopods enjoy warm temperatures and an occasional misting, but do not do as well in an extremely wet environment.
